GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Minn. — A Cohasset woman was killed and two other people were critically injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on crash in Itasca County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash happened at about 4:34 p.m. Saturday near Highway 2 and 17th Avenue Northwest in Grand Rapids Township. The State Patrol said a Chevrolet Colorado was traveling west on U.S. Highway 2 while a Chevrolet Impala was traveling east. The vehicles collided head-on in the eastbound lanes, according to the agency’s crash report.

The driver of the Impala, identified by the State Patrol as 42-year-old Janelle Swenson of Cohasset, died at the scene.

Two people in the Colorado were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth with life-threatening injuries. The State Patrol identified them as a 38-year-old Deer River woman who was driving the Colorado and a 41-year-old Cohasset man who was a passenger.

The State Patrol said Swenson was wearing a seat belt. The two people in the Colorado were not wearing seat belts, according to the crash report.

Alcohol was not listed as a factor in the crash. Road conditions were dry at the time.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating. The agency listed the case number as ICR 26311051.
