MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — Two people were taken into custody after a driver allegedly fired at a Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy during an attempted traffic stop Tuesday evening in Maplewood.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. near Rice Street and Roselawn Avenue West. According to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy and his K-9 partner were responding to an unrelated call when the deputy observed what appeared to be a road-rage incident.

The deputy pulled behind a Buick LeSabre. Authorities said the driver then made a sudden U-turn and fired through the vehicle’s driver-side window at close range.

A bullet reportedly ricocheted off the hood of the deputy’s squad car before striking its windshield. No injuries to the deputy or K-9 partner were reported in the initial information released by authorities.

The Buick fled at a high rate of speed toward the McDonough Townhomes, where the deputy lost sight of it. Witnesses later reported seeing the suspected gunman leave the Buick and enter another vehicle.

A Minnesota State Patrol trooper subsequently located that vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 694 near Rice Street. Multiple law-enforcement agencies and a State Patrol helicopter assisted in the response, and both drivers were eventually arrested.

The Sheriff’s Office described the suspected gunman as a 25-year-old St. Paul man. Investigators said he discarded a handgun from the vehicle during the pursuit. A Ramsey County deputy and her K-9 partner later recovered the firearm along the 1900 block of Rice Street.

The suspected shooter remained in the Ramsey County Jail as of Wednesday morning but had not yet been formally charged. Authorities had not publicly released the identities of either person taken into custody.
