HOPKINS, Minnesota — Three people, including a child, were found dead Wednesday morning following a reported domestic incident at an in-home daycare in Hopkins.

Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson said officers responded shortly after 9 a.m. to Brown Bear Daycare on the 200 block of Tyler Avenue North.

A parent arriving to drop off a child witnessed the incident and contacted police, according to information released by the department.

Three people found dead

Officers entered the residence and found a man, woman and child dead inside.

Police preliminarily believe the three were members of one family. Investigators also believe the deceased man was responsible for the deaths of the woman and child before taking his own life.

The two adults are believed to have owned and operated the daycare. The child who died is believed to have been their child.

Authorities have not publicly released the victims’ names or ages.

The manner and cause of the deaths have not been disclosed. Police also have not identified the type of weapon involved or provided information about a possible motive.

Six other children unharmed

Six other children were inside the daycare at the time of the incident.

Officers removed the children from the residence and reunited them with their families. Police said none of those children was physically injured.

Information released by authorities indicates a parent arriving at the daycare witnessed the incident. It remains unclear what the six surviving children may have seen.

No continuing threat reported

Police described the incident as isolated and said the suspected perpetrator is among the deceased.

Authorities said there is no continuing threat to the public.

The police response brought multiple emergency vehicles and investigators to the area. Tyler Avenue North was blocked near the scene while authorities continued their work.

Officials respond

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed the Hopkins tragedy during public remarks Wednesday.

Frey said he contacted Hopkins Mayor Patrick Hanlon and offered assistance from the City of Minneapolis. He also directed members of his staff to interrupt his meetings if Hopkins requested immediate assistance.

Officials have not announced that the incident is connected to any broader threat.

Hopkins police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
