NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said New York City does not have the legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu despite an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Mamdani said that after reviewing the issue, the city determined it lacks the legal authority to enforce the ICC warrant. He instead called on the federal government to address the matter and urged the United States to take action regarding the warrant.
The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over allegations related to the war in Gaza. Israel rejects the allegations and disputes the court’s jurisdiction.
