MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer-involved death that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Madison.
The National Correspondent Network (NCN) contacted the Wisconsin Department of Justice seeking official information. In response to NCN’s media inquiry, the department provided its official press release outlining the known facts of the investigation.
According to the DOJ, at approximately 1:00 p.m., four Madison Police Department officers responded to the Marquette neighborhood following reports of a person allegedly checking parked vehicles. Officers located the individual, who fled on a bicycle.
At approximately 1:35 p.m., officers made contact with the individual near the intersection of South Baldwin Street and Williamson Street. During the encounter, the DOJ said the individual became involved in a physical altercation with officers, brandished a knife, and injured one officer. Another officer attempted to deploy a Taser without success before the injured officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
Officials said emergency medical services were requested immediately and life-saving measures were performed before the individual was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The DOJ reported that two Madison police officers were injured during the incident. Both officers were treated at a local hospital and have since been released. No members of the public were injured.
The four responding officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Madison Police Department policy.
The Wisconsin DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation with assistance from a DCI Crime Response Specialist, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Sun Prairie Police Department. Once the investigation is complete, investigators will submit their findings to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office for review.
