EAGAN, Minn. — Three people were arrested after a fire broke out Wednesday evening at the former Metcalf Middle School in Eagan, according to authorities. Police officers on patrol reportedly noticed smoke coming from the vacant school near Diffley Road and responded to investigate. Officers observed a broken window before firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire. Authorities said two adults and one juvenile exited the building and were taken into custody. The juvenile was later released to a guardian with misdemeanor charges, while an adult man and woman were booked into the Dakota County Jail on suspicion of burglary, trespassing, and fleeing a peace officer. The Eagan Fire Department extinguished the fire, but officials say the building suffered significant smoke and water damage, leaving it unsafe for occupancy. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, including whether it was intentionally set. No injuries have been reported. The former Metcalf Middle School closed due to declining enrollment and was later sold for future redevelopment.
