MINNEAPOLIS, MN — At Karmel Mall following Friday prayers, Somali and Muslim leaders gathered to sound an alarm. A threatening voicemail — left for a Somali daycare operator — was played publicly before a room full of community leaders. The message: “All of you trashy Muslims, men, women, and children, will be burned to death. You will all die.” Community leaders say this is not an isolated incident. Since late 2025, Somali-owned businesses across Minneapolis have faced break-ins, vandalism, and threatening phone calls. A school bus was set on fire by a hate group. No children were on board. Imam Yusuf Abdulle, Executive Director of the Islamic Association of North America, was direct. “These attacks did not come out of nowhere. They are fueled by years of reckless rhetoric, political scapegoating, and media narratives that repeatedly associate Somalis with crime and danger.” Leaders warned that Somali children — particularly young girls who wear the hijab — are at heightened risk. Community advocates are calling on elected officials, law enforcement, and all Minnesotans to recognize and condemn the hatred now targeting this community.
