MIAMI — A shots-fired incident at Miami International Airport on Wednesday afternoon triggered a massive law enforcement response, with Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies taking one man into custody. No injuries were reported, and officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Deputies responded to reports of shots fired at the airport just after 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. NBC 6 South Florida reported, citing officials, that the shooter fired gunshots in a parking lot and also fired at a garbage can. It remains unclear how many shots were fired.
Cell phone video from witnesses showed a bearded man in handcuffs being escorted by deputies outside the airport. Other footage showed deputies, some in tactical gear and carrying rifles, closing off areas of the airport with yellow crime scene tape.
Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed terminal roadways closed as dozens of sheriff's office vehicles converged on the airport.
The incident disrupted airport operations for hours. The departure level from doors 12 to 17 and the departure-level roadway's outer lanes were closed, and vehicle traffic was diverted to the arrivals level, airport officials said. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department said all passengers and employees were safe and there were no reported injuries.
What remains unknown is significant. Officials have not released the identity of the person taken into custody and have not said whether he is facing charges. Officials said deputies were actively questioning the subject. It is also unclear whether a weapon was recovered, how many shots were fired, or what motivated the gunfire.
