Sexual Assault Reported at Massachusetts State Police Barracks on Martha’s Vineyard

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. — Authorities are investigating a reported sexual assault that allegedly occurred at a Massachusetts State Police barracks on Martha’s Vineyard in August, according to statements from law enforcement reported by CBS Boston.

Massachusetts State Police said the reported assault involved two people who are not affiliated with the department.

According to CBS Boston’s WBZ-TV I-Team, a Massachusetts State Police trooper working on Martha’s Vineyard for the summer allegedly allowed a male friend to stay overnight at the Oak Bluffs barracks.

Sources told the I-Team that a woman was later seen leaving the area and reportedly told a passing motorist that she had been sexually assaulted.

NCN is not identifying the woman because she is a reported victim of sexual assault.

Massachusetts State Police said the department became aware of the reported incident near the end of August and is cooperating with the local police investigation.

Oak Bluffs Police clarified that Massachusetts State Police are not involved in conducting the criminal investigation.

According to Oak Bluffs Police, investigators established probable cause and obtained court-authorized search warrants as part of the investigation. Police said some of those warrants were executed at the Massachusetts State Police barracks.

Massachusetts State Police General Headquarters has cooperated with matters connected to the investigation, according to Oak Bluffs Police.

The department has also been communicating with the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office regarding the investigation and its findings.

Massachusetts State Police have separately opened an internal affairs investigation, according to CBS Boston.

No criminal conviction has been reported, and the allegation remains under investigation.

Oak Bluffs is located on Martha’s Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts State Police barracks in Oak Bluffs serves the island.
