UPDATE (Sept. 29): Minneapolis police have released more information on the crash. According to MPD's public information release, the vehicle was a stolen Hyundai Elantra traveling west on Southeast 4th Street when it struck the trailer of a tractor-trailer traveling south on the I-35W exit ramp and crossing SE 4th Street. The Elantra became lodged beneath the trailer; both vehicles came to a stop on Ninth Avenue SE between SE 4th Street and University Avenue SE.
Two males in the front seats and a female in the rear seat died at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will release their identities. Minneapolis firefighters extricated four other passengers from the rear seat — two 18-year-old men, a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy — and ambulances transported them to Hennepin Healthcare with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the stolen vehicle's speed contributed to the crash. The semi driver was not injured and cooperated with officers. The southbound I-35W exit to SE 4th Street and Ninth Avenue SE were closed for several hours. MPD says it is investigating the sequence of events that led to the crash. (Incident 26-282263.)
