UPDATE — Friday, Oct. 9: The Minneapolis Police Department issued a news release Friday morning describing an armed carjacking and officer-involved shooting Thursday night in the same general area.
According to the release, officers responded to the area of West 31st Street and Pillsbury Avenue on a report of a person with a gun; the call was later updated to a carjacking at gunpoint. Police say a 16-year-old boy tried to carjack one vehicle — the driver drove off — then carjacked a second vehicle at gunpoint and fled.
Officers tracked the victim's vehicle using city cameras and confronted the suspect in the victim's vehicle near Pleasant Avenue and West 31st Street, according to the release. Police say the teen rammed a squad car, and an officer fired their service weapon during the ramming.
The suspect then fled on foot and was caught near West 31st Street and Grand Avenue South, police say. He was taken to a hospital after complaining of pain and reporting mental health concerns; his name has not been released, and the release does not say whether he was hit by the gunfire.
Two officers suffered minor injuries — one an ankle injury, the other a small cut to the face, according to the release. The officer who fired was not injured.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating the incident.
MPD has not said whether this incident is connected to the heavy police presence reported Thursday night at Lake Street and Pleasant Avenue, about five blocks north.
MINNEAPOLIS — A heavy Minneapolis police response shut down streets around Lake Street and Pleasant Avenue on Thursday evening.
Video posted to social media around 7:19 p.m. CT showed more than ten Minneapolis police squad cars with emergency lights activated and yellow crime-scene tape strung across streets and sidewalks near Karmel Mall.
Reporter Frankie McLister, reporting on scene, said approximately seven squads were present and multiple streets, including Grand Avenue, were shut down after reports of a gunshot and an officer needing assistance. He said a neighbor reported hearing one gunshot, and a civilian car was seen wedged between police cars, according to his report co-authored with WCCO.
Multiple sources told NCN that federal agencies were also present at the scene. NCN has not independently confirmed federal involvement.
NCN has emailed the Minneapolis Police Department's public information office seeking details about the incident. No official statement had been issued as of publication.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
