UPDATE — Saturday, October 10, 2026
Agent identified. A WIRED investigation has identified the federal agent seen on video in a yellow vest carrying a rifle at the Oct. 8 Marble Hill scene as Brenden Cuni, an ICE Supervisory Detention and Deportation Officer assigned to the National Fugitive Operations team, according to WIRED. The outlet reports the identification was made through court documents, social media and public records, and that a law enforcement source said Cuni identified himself to NYPD officers at the scene as an ICE officer. WIRED describes him as the only federal agent seen on video brandishing a weapon. The outlet further reports Cuni has been repeatedly accused in federal court of unlawful arrests and use of force in New York City and Minneapolis. Important caveats: WIRED’s reviewed filings do not say Cuni fired the shots, and DHS has not named the agent who fired. These are WIRED’s findings, not official DHS statements.
NCN correspondent’s account. NCN Correspondent said he witnessed Cuni during the federal immigration enforcement surge in the Minneapolis metro area and described seeing the agent drag a pregnant woman. This is on-scene account and has not been independently verified by NCN.
Federal officials’ claims about Belgal’s record. The New York Post, citing federal officials, reports new claims about Oscar Belgal’s alleged criminal history: a 2023 gunpoint robbery in Fordham Heights, drug charges for which he was on supervised release, an ICE detainer lodged after a December 2023 arrest that officials say was not honored, and a failed attempt by federal agents to arrest him in September. According to the Post, DHS Secretary Mullin blamed sanctuary-city policies. These are officials’ claims as reported by the Post — not established court findings. This story is developing.
Independent corroboration. The outlet Status Coup reports that Brenden Cuni is the same agent who led a Minneapolis ICE team seen dragging and kneeling on a pregnant woman, citing court records and footage connecting both incidents, according to its Oct. 9 Instagram report. This independently matches NCN Correspondent Saed Dahir's on-scene account described above. These are Status Coup's findings, not official statements.
— National Correspondent Network UPDATE — Friday, Oct. 9: Several major developments today:
NYPD releases official account. In a statement from the Police Commissioner’s briefing sent to NCN, the NYPD said it received two 911 calls at 4:04 p.m. on Oct. 8 about the shooting, and that a federal agent also called 911 requesting first FDNY then NYPD. According to the NYPD’s preliminary evidence, at least one ICE agent fired seven rounds, striking 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck below his left ear. Belgal was in a gray Honda CR-V with a five-year-old boy believed to be his son. NYPD ARGUS cameras showed plainclothes federal officers approaching the vehicle with at least one gun drawn, but did not capture the shooting itself. Officers who heard the gunfire responded, found Belgal handcuffed on the ground, rendered aid, and transported him to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in stable condition — a response the NYPD says was captured on body-worn camera. At least seven shell casings were recovered; the vehicle had ballistic damage to the windshield and a shattered rear window. The child was located safe with a family member. The NYPD says federal agents have assumed control of the investigation.
NYPD releases bodycam footage. Friday morning, the NYPD released body-worn camera footage from the first officers to arrive at the scene, posting it via @NYPDNews. The footage shows officers arriving to a tense scene — a man in a construction vest holding a rifle, bystanders shouting, and a handcuffed man on the ground receiving treatment to his neck — then carrying the wounded man into an NYPD vehicle and rushing him to the hospital. The video does not show the shooting itself, which the NYPD says happened before officers arrived.
Judge blocks deportation. U.S. District Judge Paul Oetken issued a two-page order temporarily blocking Belgal’s deportation, ruling he cannot be removed from the United States without a court order while his habeas petition challenging his detention remains pending. The judge also barred federal authorities from transferring him outside the Southern or Eastern Districts of New York or the District of New Jersey without prior court approval.
Belgal moved to Brooklyn detention. Belgal has been transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he spoke to his attorneys Friday. According to his attorneys, he told them he is in pain, still has a bullet in his body, and wants to see his family (CNN, USA Today). A court hearing was held Friday afternoon in Manhattan.
UPDATE — DHS issues official statement (Thursday evening): The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement posted to X that ICE officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation in the Bronx around 4:00 PM ET to arrest a Dominican national with a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. DHS alleged the man has associations with the Trinitarios gang and said the NYPD arrested him on Dec. 7, 2023, releasing him into the community days later. DHS confirmed an ICE officer discharged his weapon, injuring the man, and said the FBI and HSI were on the scene with the incident under investigation. NCN has not independently verified the criminal-history claims in the DHS statement.
Separately, a crowd of roughly 300 protesters gathered near Allen Hospital on Thursday night, according to the New York Post, chanting against ICE. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams held a press conference near the scene.
NEW YORK — A federal immigration agent shot and wounded a man in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 8, 2026, law enforcement sources told the New York Post.
The shooting happened around 4:20 p.m. Eastern time on Marble Hill Avenue in the Bronx’s Marble Hill neighborhood, when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fired at a man at the scene, the sources said.
The man was in a car at the scene when the agent fired, the sources told the Post.
Video from the scene showed officers pulling a man from a silver SUV in handcuffs as armed federal agents surrounded the vehicle, the Post reported.
Witness photos shared with NCN show bullet holes in the windshield and rear window of the silver SUV at the scene.
The wounded man’s injuries are not life-threatening, according to the sources.
ICE officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment, the Post reported.
The New York Police Department said in a statement posted to its official X account that the shooting happened at around 4 p.m. and involved federal law enforcement agents in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. The NYPD said it was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting. The person who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention, according to the NYPD.
Two agents were also injured in the encounter and are being treated at a local hospital, a law enforcement source told CNN.
The agents were with ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations and encountered a person they were targeting just after 4 p.m., according to preliminary information from the law enforcement source cited by CNN.
The man was shot in the neck but is expected to survive, according to law enforcement sources cited by the Post.
A 5-year-old boy was sitting in the back of the SUV when the shots were fired; the child was not injured, the sources said.
The sources told the Post the feds had been trying to arrest a 28-year-old suspected migrant gang member when the encounter went wrong, and that investigators are looking into whether the wounded man is tied to the migrant moped gang connected to the shooting of an off-duty Border Patrol agent at Fort Washington Park last year.
Witnesses told officers they heard five to six gunshots and people screaming, according to police officials cited by CNN.
One of the two injured agents may have been hurt in a car accident, though it’s unclear whether it was part of the arrest or the response, according to a federal official cited by CNN.
Protesters began gathering at the scene in the hours after the shooting, CNN reported.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she has been briefed on the incident. “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” she said in a statement. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement posted to his official X account that early reports indicate agents surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds, and that the child was believed to be physically unharmed.
Mamdani said he has called the President and will demand an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he said. “Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children. Abolish ICE.”
An NYPD spokesperson told Reuters the agents involved were part of the Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of ICE, and that federal authorities are investigating.
Homeland Security Investigations responded to the scene to take over the investigation, according to a federal source cited by CNN — similar to the law enforcement response after the Sept. 20 ICE shooting in Austin, Texas.
Mamdani and President Trump had not yet spoken as of Thursday evening, according to a spokesperson for the mayor.
