WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping closed a three-day state visit Friday with a limited economic package: roughly $30 billion in reciprocal tariff reductions, a two-month extension of the U.S.-China trade truce, and new channels for trade and artificial-intelligence talks.
The White House said the two countries reached consensus on more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction — covering U.S. exports such as agricultural goods, wood and cosmetics, and imports including small appliances, toys and decorations. Details are expected Monday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said.
The two sides also extended a trade truce that was due to expire November 10 by two months, pushing the deadline to January 10. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the extension gives both sides "more time to see what we can do on the economic front."
On artificial intelligence, the leaders agreed to an ongoing dialogue on the technology's risks and benefits, with the next session expected in November, plus a communication channel for AI-related incidents. Trump told reporters the pair discussed his preferred term "super intelligence" for AI. No agreement was reached on AI regulation, and U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors remain fully in place.
Unresolved: Taiwan, rare-earth supplies, industrial subsidies and data rules. Bessent said Beijing is meeting its requirement to buy 25 million tons of soybeans but lagging on a $17 billion pledge for other agricultural goods.
The summit leaned heavily on ceremony — military flyovers, a state dinner, tea with the two first ladies and a tour of the National Archives. Xi, on his first visit to Washington since 2015, called the relationship one of "strategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness and reciprocity." Trump said "our farmers are going to be happy" as a result of the talks.
China also announced it will send two giant pandas to Atlanta and proposed a large student-exchange target.
