DEARBORN, MI — A planned anti-Islam demonstration organized by far-right activist Jake Lang collapsed Monday afternoon in Dearborn, Michigan — one of the largest Muslim communities in the United States — after counter-protesters flooded the scene and police arrested Lang and an associate before any event could take place. Lang, a January 6th Capitol attack participant who was pardoned by President Trump earlier this year, traveled to the Detroit metro area for what organizers billed as an “Americans Against Islamification” event, including a planned book burning. It never happened. According to witnesses on scene, Lang and an associate set up a wooden cross and an American flag near a U-Haul vehicle and attempted to hold a rally while police searched the vehicle. A speaker blared music as Lang’s associate attempted to address the crowd — but was quickly drowned out by traffic noise and counter-protesters chanting “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free.” Moments later both Lang and his associate were arrested. Their videographer was escorted away in a police cruiser. The U-Haul and trailer were towed from the scene. No books were burned. No rally was held. Police moved to disperse protesters, who responded with chants of “not one step back.” Reuters published photographs placing Lang in Dearborn and Hamtramck earlier in the day, connected to the planned demonstration.
