DETROIT — A shooting at an after-hours club on a residential street in Detroit left three men dead and four other people wounded early Sunday morning, according to Detroit police.
Officers responded to a 911 call at 7:22 a.m. near Eaton Avenue and Prest Street and found three men who had been fatally shot, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters at a news conference Sunday. The men who died were 30 and older, Bettison said.
Four more victims — two men and two women in their 20s and 30s — were taken to area hospitals in private cars with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
"A fight occurred, an altercation occurred, and as a result individuals decided to settle it with gun violence," Bettison said.
The chief said the address was known to the department, which had received seven calls for service there this year, and that an investigation into the location was already underway. He described the venue only in general terms: "Imagine a strip club... I'll leave it at that."
Bettison said investigators have leads but declined to discuss them, and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield called the shooting "heartbreaking" and said the city will crack down on illegal after-hours operations. "Our community should not suffer from this type of violence," she said.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-773-2587.
NCN has contacted the Detroit Police Department's media relations office for additional comment. This is a developing story.
